If you've never done a cap toss before, it might be intimidating. Don't worry, these six quick tips will help you get the perfect cap toss shot every time!
Tassel Out
Hold your grad cap with your thumb on top. Turn the cap so the top of the mortar board (the flat square part) and tassel face your photographer. This is the best-looking part of your cap so it's the part we want to see in the photo!
Throw Straight Up
Think about throwing the cap straight up above you. Make sure your arm doesn't cover your face when you throw. We'll do a few practice tosses so you're comfortable. You don't need to launch it in the air. A gentle toss will do. And don't worry about catching it before it hits the ground!
Posing Your Face
Make sure to smile throughout the entire toss. Your eyes can either follow the cap to look straight up, or you can look at the camera.
Take a Step
Moving your body can help make a cap toss more visually interesting. You can stand with one leg bent at the knee or, if you're feeling confident, toss your cap while walking
Relax Your Hand
So often I see grads tense up their hands when they toss a cap. Think back to your high school physics class and transfer that energy into the cap. Keep the hand relaxed and your fingers closed instead of open.
